U.S. ADA SERVICE ANIMAL INFORMATION

Summary of general access principles under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This card is a private identification record.

  • Service animals are generally permitted to accompany people with disabilities in areas where members of the public are allowed to go.
  • When it is not obvious what service an animal provides, staff may ask only the limited questions permitted under the ADA.
  • Under the ADA, staff cannot require documentation — such as proof that the animal has been certified, trained or licensed — as a condition of entry.
  • A service animal can be asked to leave in circumstances permitted under the ADA, including when it is out of control or not housebroken.
